Not Your Keys, Not Your Crypto

Self-custody explained. Why DeFi was built, what it opens up, and why Zypto App is the access layer for all of it.

Banks hold your money. CEXes hold your keys. Zypto holds none of it. Because you do.

That’s the promise of DeFi. And Zypto App was built to make it real.

What “Keys” Means

When you own crypto, you don’t hold coins in a vault. You hold a private key, a secret code that proves you control a blockchain address and everything in it.

Think of it like this: your blockchain address is a safe deposit box. The private key is the only key that opens it. Whoever holds that key controls what’s inside.

When you store crypto on an exchange, you don’t get the key. The exchange does. They hold it on your behalf. If they lock your account, freeze withdrawals, get hacked, or go under, your crypto goes with them.

Self-custody means you hold your own key. No intermediary. No permission required. Your assets, your rules.

Why This Matters

The phrase “not your keys, not your crypto” didn’t come out of nowhere. It came out of hard experience.

In January 2009, as banks across the world were being bailed out with public money, Satoshi Nakamoto embedded a message in Bitcoin’s very first block: “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.”

That was a statement of intent. The 2008 financial crisis had just wiped out trillions in savings and pensions. Lehman Brothers had collapsed. Governments had pumped nearly $700 billion into failing banks through TARP. Ordinary people had paid for the mistakes of institutions they had no say in and no way out of.

Bitcoin was the answer. A financial system where no single institution could fail your funds.

Then history started repeating itself, this time inside crypto.

Mt. Gox, 2014. The world’s largest Bitcoin exchange at the time lost 850,000 BTC to a hack. Users had trusted the exchange with their keys. Those keys were gone.

FTX, 2022. One of the most trusted names in crypto collapsed almost overnight. Billions in customer funds vanished. Users who had left their assets on the platform found accounts frozen with no way to access them.

The pattern is the same. When you hand your keys to someone else, you hand them your financial sovereignty too. Read more in The Untold Stories of How Multi-billion Dollar Crypto Exchanges Were Built.

Worth Knowing

DeFi gives you more control. That comes with more responsibility. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

Your seed phrase is your backup. When you set up a self-custody wallet, you’re given a 12 or 24-word recovery phrase. This is the only way to restore access if you lose your device. Write it down. Store it offline. Never share it with anyone. Zypto App prompts you through this at setup.

Scams target self-custody users. Phishing links, fake support DMs, wallet-draining dApps. They exist. Zypto’s built-in security features include transaction previews, contract risk warnings, and real-time scam alerts. Use them.

You are the approver. Every transaction needs your confirmation. No one can move your funds without your key. That’s not a bug. That’s the point.

Zypto App: The Access Layer

Zypto App isn’t just a wallet. It’s the access layer for the crypto ecosystem.

Hold assets on 20+ blockchains. Swap across a million routes. Connect to DeFi protocols via WalletConnect. Browse Web3 inside the app. Spend with your Visa Card. Pay bills. Top up your phone. Buy gift cards. All from one place. All with you in control.

We’re 100% DeFi. The banks hold your money. The CEXes hold your keys. Zypto holds none of it.

Because you do.
