What is Tornado Cash?
Tornado Cash is a privacy protocol on Ethereum. It works as a non-custodial mixer: users deposit ETH or tokens into a shared pool and later withdraw to a different address, using zero-knowledge proofs to break the on-chain link between the deposit and the withdrawal. The contracts are immutable, meaning that once deployed they cannot be changed or shut down by their creators. The protocol first launched in 2019.
TORN is the governance token. Holders can vote on proposals relating to the protocol and its community treasury.
Tornado Cash has a notable regulatory history. In August 2022 the U.S. Treasury's OFAC added it to its sanctions list. In late 2024 a federal appeals court ruled that its immutable contracts were not "property" that could be sanctioned, and OFAC removed it from the list in March 2025. Separate criminal cases involving individuals connected to the project have continued. You can review the Tornado Cash price and hold TORN in a self-custody wallet.
