What is Taiko?
Taiko is an Ethereum Layer 2 network, a type of rollup that processes transactions away from Ethereum and then settles them back to the main chain. The goal is to add capacity and lower costs for users while keeping Ethereum as the security and settlement layer. Taiko describes itself as a based rollup, which means Ethereum's own validators help order its blocks rather than a single company-run sequencer.
TAIKO is the network's native token. It is used for governance and for participating in the protocol, including the roles that propose and prove blocks. The token launched in 2024, a few weeks after Taiko's mainnet went live on Ethereum.
Taiko is a relatively new project, so its ecosystem and token role are still developing. If you are researching it, treat current activity and listings as early-stage rather than settled.
