News & analysis
What is Espresso?
Espresso is a decentralized shared sequencer and confirmation layer for rollups. Most Layer-2 networks today rely on a single, centralized sequencer to order transactions, which creates concentration risk and leaves chains isolated from one another. Espresso lets multiple rollups share one decentralized sequencing layer, giving fast, credible confirmations and easier communication between chains.
The network uses a Byzantine fault tolerant protocol where validators stake the ESP token to take part in ordering transactions and confirming blocks across the rollups it serves. ESP is used for staking, delegating to validators, and paying protocol fees, and it secures the network through proof-of-stake.
Espresso Systems was built by a team of cryptographers and engineers, reached mainnet in 2024, and the ESP token launched in early 2026, making this a newer asset to weigh accordingly.
