What is UMA?
UMA is a decentralized oracle protocol that brings real-world data and verifiable answers onto blockchains for smart contracts to use. Its core component is an "optimistic oracle": data submitted by a proposer is assumed correct unless someone challenges it during a dispute window, which keeps most requests cheap and fast.
When a submission is disputed, UMA token holders vote to settle the correct outcome. The UMA token is used for that governance and dispute resolution, and holders can stake it to help secure the oracle and earn rewards for voting honestly. UMA launched in 2020 and runs as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, with its oracle serving applications across multiple chains, including prediction markets, bridges, and insurance protocols.
