Today in Crypto - A Million-Dollar Student Loan Cycle Onchain

1,050 student loans settle fully onchain, Hanwha builds tokenized securities on Avalanche, and 4,000 BTC exits Liquid.

Public ledgers stopped being the demo and started being the books. A million dollars of student credit ran its full cycle onchain in Southeast Asia, a Korean brokerage is building the platform its securities will settle on two years before the law requires it, and a Bitcoin sidechain went quiet after most of its reserves left through a single authorization key.

  • Pencil Finance closed a $1 million loan bundle covering roughly 1,050 students in Indonesia and the Philippines, repayments included.
  • Hanwha Investment & Securities is building on Avalanche and Hyperledger Besu, ahead of Korean amendments dated February 4, 2027.
  • Around 4,000 BTC, close to 95% of Liquid’s federation reserves, moved out on Saturday and the network paused.

The ledger keeps the record in all three. What separates them is who holds the key that can move what the record says is yours.

Pencil Finance has completed a $1 million student lending cycle recorded end to end on a public chain, funding roughly 1,050 loans through the education financing company ErudiFi. Capital deployment, repayment servicing and the return of funds to lenders were all written onchain rather than reconciled afterwards.

The loans went to students in Indonesia and the Philippines. ErudiFi’s wider portfolio has now supported more than 6,600 students across 118 institutions.

The lending runs on EDU Chain, an Ethereum network built with Arbitrum Orbit, and the capital came from Animoca Brands, Open Campus and NewCampus. Co-founder Frank Li’s argument for putting the cycle onchain is that anyone can check every repayment as it happens.

Zypto take: Credit reaches ordinary people last, and Southeast Asia is where it arrives slowest of all. Value already crosses those borders as crypto and lands on a real obligation, which is exactly what paying bills with crypto does across 87,000+ billers in 126 countries.

Hanwha starts building two years before Korea’s rules land

Hanwha Investment & Securities is developing a tokenized securities platform with FairSquare Lab, built on Avalanche and Hyperledger Besu. Construction started in 2025, well ahead of the South Korean amendments that take effect on February 4, 2027.

Korea’s Financial Services Commission has set out a three stage rollout. It opens with privately placed money market funds, bonds, unlisted stocks and fractional securities, then extends to all publicly offered securities. Hanwha Group is separately the largest shareholder in Securitize with a 9.6% stake, and put 30 billion won, around $22.3 million, into Canton Network operator Digital Asset in July.

Zypto take: Building in 2025 for rules that bite in 2027 says a brokerage has already decided where securities settle. Tokenized assets earn their keep the moment you can hold them like anything else you own, which is the job of the real world assets layer in Zypto App.

Liquid pauses after 4,000 BTC leaves the federation

The Liquid Network has paused after roughly 4,000 BTC, about $320 million, was withdrawn from its federation wallet on Saturday. That’s close to 95% of the roughly 4,200 BTC the wallet held beforehand.

Liquid is a Bitcoin sidechain: federation operators hold the underlying BTC and LBTC circulates against it. The coins left through the SideSwap peg-out authorization key, which Liquid says wasn’t compromised, and the specific flaw hasn’t been published.

Whoever moved them left an onchain note reading “we are whitehats. contact us on chain”, and say they will return the funds once Blockstream patches the vulnerability in Elements, the open source software the sidechain runs on. Exchanges suspended LBTC deposits and withdrawals, bridge nodes were switched off, and other assets on Liquid were unaffected.

Zypto take: LBTC is a claim on Bitcoin that a federation holds for you, and Saturday is what that arrangement costs when the code underneath it gives way. Bitcoin in Zypto App sits under keys on your own device, with no signer set standing between you and it. Download Zypto App.

Key Takeaways

  • The system of record is shifting from a servicer’s spreadsheet to a public chain, whether the thing being recorded is a student repayment or a bond settlement.
  • Institutions are building years ahead of the law rather than waiting for it, which tells you where they expect settlement to end up.
  • A wrapped asset carries its custodian’s risk no matter how closely it tracks the price of the asset it represents.
  • Every one of today’s stories comes back to the same question. Who holds the key that can move what the ledger says is yours?
